Introduction to Mold

This course offers an introduction to mold considerations in design and construction–specifically, why mold has become an issue, adverse health effects, remediation, policies, and legislation.

After completing this course, a professional should be able to:

  • Explain the significance of mold spores
  • Identify the six conditions that are needed for spores to be activated
  • Identify food sources for common mold
  • List the most common sources for moisture that generally result in mold growth
  • Describe how energy-efficient building practices facilitate mold infestations
  • Explain how changing weather conditions may be contributing to mold problems
  • Describe how poor design and/or defects in construction materials and methods may lead to mold infestations
  • Identify the three major types of illness that can be caused by common house-hold molds
  • Describe mycotoxins and recognize which molds produce them, under what conditions, and why
  • Identify the adverse health effects that have been alleged to be caused by mycotoxins
  • Explain why illness caused by mold is challenging for physicians to diagnose
