This course provides an introduction to masonry. Topics include Brick, concrete, clay tile, Gypsum block, Glass block, and stone masonries.
After completing this course a professional should be able to:
- List three weathering grades for bricks, and relate these to environments appropriate for each.
- Recognize the other major categories of bricks and associate each type with its appropriate practical environment or application.
- Describe concrete block, structural clay, gypsum block, and glass block tile in terms of appearance and material, and typical applications.
- Explain the role of gypsum block in fireproofing.
- List seven common stone forms. For a particular application, recognize which form is most appropriate.
- List the tests that may be applied to mortar to insure a proper mix. Based on load-bearing or weather, state which type of mortar (M, S, N, O) is generally used.
