Why Home Inspection?
The demand for qualified
home inspectors is skyrocketing as savvy homebuyers wish to learn as much as
they can about potential homes prior to purchase. There’s no better time to
enter this interesting field either full-time or as a part-time business.
Do I have what it takes to be a
successful home inspector? Are you the kind of person
who:
-
Doesn’t want to be tied to a desk all
day?
-
Has a desire to run a small business?
-
Is interested in construction and how
things work?
-
Has a technical mind and like to figure
things out?
-
Is organized and clear-thinking?
-
Enjoys meeting and helping people?
-
Is willing to learn and take
initiative?
If that sounds like
you, then now is the perfect time to start taking steps toward a challenging and
rewarding career in home inspection.
How do I become a home
inspector? You can use this site to search for a
school that offers home inspection education or to purchase books, CD-ROMs or
videos for use as reference tools.
1. Enroll
in a School – Schools offer you the choice of either traditional
learning in a classroom setting, or distance education (online and/or
correspondence). Dearborn partner schools use our comprehensive training systems
– developed with the best in the industry and incorporating a number of features
to enhance student learning, including:
-
Module text broken down into several
manageable Study Sessions to help you work your way through the
material
-
Detailed instructions walk you through
the steps necessary to complete each session
-
Quick quizzes at the end of each
chapter/unit reinforce the material and allow you to monitor your own learning
-
More than 1,500 technically precise
illustrations of a home’s major systems bring the text descriptions to life
-
Visual aids – available on CD-ROM or
video – contain hundreds of real-world inspection scene with suggestions for
handling defects during an inspection
By choosing to pursue your education
through a school, you will receive personalized attention suited to your
learning style. In some states, you are required to complete a certain number of
classroom hours, which will dictate which learning method you choose.
2. Purchase
Reference Materials – Our comprehensive training materials are
excellent reference materials for the beginning or established home inspector.
You can choose a complete overview of the home’s major systems, explore a system
in-depth, or a reference that has hundreds of illustrations and photographs
outlining both normal and defective components and offering suggestions on how
best to handle them during an inspection.
Does my state regulate
this industry? Regulation of this market is in place or on the
horizon. Currently, 13 states require prelicensing education for home
inspectors, and 15 states require continuing education courses. Eight more
states are considering regulation, making a total of 36 states with existing or
pending regulation.

exist in your state.
Do home inspectors just inspect
homes? Home inspectors with talent and ambition can expand their
business services to include commercial inspections and expert witness
testimony. Radon, lead-based paint, septic systems, mold, and indoor air testing
are just a few of the services that home inspections can provide for additional
fees. Plus, the financial investment and overhead needed to run a home
inspection business are minimal, making this a lucrative small business
opportunity.
